With the economy in shambles and gold prices high, gold jewelry is another type of gold commodity that is a good source of investment, mainly due to its monetary value.

Gold jewelry items like gold rings, bracelets, earrings, necklaces and pendants can be stunning in both their artful designs and intrinsic glitter, as well as their high price and exclusivity.

Selling Old, Unwanted and Damaged Gold Jewelry

If you have gold jewelry items you would like to sell you need to sort them into two piles, one pile that can be sold as scrap gold and a second for jewelry items that are unique enough and in fine enough condition to still maintain their intrinsic value as jewelry.

What is Bullion?

A 'bullion' means any precious metal (gold included) that is in a form whose 'primary value' comes from the actual worth of the metal and not from an artificial currency value. The most familiar forms of bullion are coins such as gold bullion coins, or bars such as gold bullion bars.

Both bullion coins and bullion bars are minted and produced by national governments.

Determining the Value of Gold Bullion

The value of any bullion, gold or otherwise, is always determined by three factors:

• The Value of the Metal – Gold is worth more than silver while platinum is worth more than gold.

• U.S. Eagles are coins embossed with the image of a bald eagle. Gold Eagles are 91.67% pure.
• Canadian Maple Leafs are coins that come with the Canadian maple leaf embossed on the them. Gold Maple Leafs were the first 99.99% pure gold coins to be released.
• Chinese Pandas are coins that depict a panda bear, the image of which changes each year.
• South African Krugerrands are the first bullion coins ever released by a nation, and are made of gold.

Any time you are selling gold bullions or gold bars, you need to pay a visit to the nearest gold or coin dealer in your area and determine their actual worth. It is the only sure fire way of knowing you are getting paid a fair price for your gold.

You may be wondering why in the title we include the word carat spelt both ways... 'carat' and 'karat'. It is because both are legitimate spellings.

Carat and Karat Mean Gold Quality

The carat, or karat, (abbreviation ct or kt) is a measure of the purity of gold alloys. In the United States and Canada, the spelling 'karat' is used, while the spelling 'carat' is used to refer to the measure of mass for gemstones.

Measuring a Gold's Purity
By the Carat: 10k, 14k, 16k, 18k, 22k, 24k Gold

A gold items purity is measured in karats (or carats, its the same thing).

The term 'karat' harks back to the ancient bazaars where 'carob' beans (thus the origin of the spelling 'carat') were used to weigh precious metals... including of course, gold.

24 karat is pure gold, but its purity means it is more expensive and less durable than gold that is alloyed with other metals. Different alloys are used in jewelry for greater strength, durability and color range.

Karatage is the Percentage of Gold

The 'karatage' of the jewelry will tell you what percentage of gold it contains: 24 karat is 100 percent, 18 karat is 75 percent, and 14 karat is 58 percent gold. When comparing gold jewelry, the higher the number of karats, the greater the value.

In determining the purity of gold alloys, carat means a proportion by weight of one part in twenty four or 41.66 parts per 1000. This means that the higher the carat value, the higher the proportion of gold in relation to the base metal content.
